This is a more conventional biography as it starts at Tubby Clayton's birth and ends with his death. Tubby Clayton: A Commission From Tim Godden I n my previous post I mentioned the British artist Tim Godden, who specializes in images of the Great War and of Edwardian sports figures.

His style captives me - there’s a simplicity and a sincerity about it I prefer to the legions of commercial artists out there specializing in military scenes. TALBOT HOUSE TO TOWER HILL: An Anthology Of The Writings Of The Reverend P.

Posts about Tubby Clayton written by Liz Trenow. When I was just starting to research my novel In Love and War, I read to my astonishment that within months of the end of the First World War several thousands of tourists undertook arduous journeys to Flanders and the Somme in a desperate search to find out what had happened to their loved ones.

Why was I so astonished?. The effigy of the Rev'd Philip Thomas Byard Clayton (popularly known as 'Tubby') is one of the last works by Cecil Thomas, the ‘soldier sculptor’, who also made the Forster Memorial in the south aisle of the church. Tubby's dog sits on a tasselled cushion at his feet and the effigy is supported by four lion cubs, one at each corner. The Revd P.B.
